Mor-Gran-Sou collaborates to sponsor Living Ag Classroom

Area cooperatives recently collaborated to provide the power of human connections on Feb. 12 and 13 to fourth graders during the 2008 KFYR Agri-International "Living Ag Classroom." Mor-Gran-Sou Electric, Capital Electric, KEM Electric, Oliver-Mercer Electric, Basin Electric and the North Dakota Association of Rural Electric Cooperatives joined forces with KFYR Radio to teach kids about the production and distribution of food. From the farmer’s field to the grocer’s shelf, kids learned about the many by-products of crops and animals that are raised in North Dakota.

Steve Markel, account exective of Clear Channel Radio, says the cooperatives made a significant investment to sponsor the Living Ag Classroom. "To us, this donation means quite a bit. We wouldn’t have a Living Ag Classroom without their sponsorship," he says.

Over 20 schools participated in the Living Ag Classroom. Co-op employees taught hundreds of fourth-graders about electricity -- what it is, where it comes from, how it is distributed and eventually how it works. They explained the importance and function of rural areas and the work it takes to get food from field to fork.

For four years in a row, North Dakota cooperatives have worked together to support and promote agriculture at the KFYR Agri-International. Jackie Miller, manager of member services of Mor-Gran-Sou Electric Cooperative, says this teamwork and message are important.

"Our roots started in agriculture. Over the years those roots took hold, and today agriculture is more important than ever, both to rural and urban areas," says Miller.

"Cooperatives bring more than electricity to homes. We provide education, support charities and give scholarships. Co-ops have a large presence in every community across the state, and we will continue to support families and businesses," she says.

Headquartered in Flasher with service centers in Mandan and Fort Yates, Mor-Gran-Sou Electric Cooperative serves the counties of Morton, Grant and Sioux.
