Mor-Gran-Sou announces scholarship winners

Mor-Gran-Sou is pleased to announce the winners of the Basin Electric Power Cooperative/Mor-Gran-Sou Electric Cooperative scholarship awards. To encompass more graduates and because education costs are a concern to our members, Mor-Gran-Sou continues to offer four, $500 scholarship awards: two of the four scholarships are designated for qualified applicants who plan to attend a certified vocational or technical school.

The scholarship committee met Feb. 20 to choose the 2009 winners. Those receiving a $500 scholarship in the fall include: Danielle Bauer, Mandan; Dillon Zins, Flasher; Lyndsey Herda, Mandan; Stacey Gerhardt, Flasher.

The applicants were required to list academics, achievements and work experience. They were also asked to describe in essay form how local cooperatives contribute to their communities. Please take a few moments to meet our scholarship recipients.

Danielle Bauer plans to attend the North Dakota State University in Fargo and earn a bachelor’s degree in animal science. Bauer, who will graduate from high school in May, has kept herself busy at Mandan High with various activities including sports, clubs, band and mentoring. She actively participates in church activities including youth group and the Fall Festival, and serves as a Eucharistic minister. Girl Scouts has meant a lot to Bauer throughout her young life. Through the program, she received the Gold Award—the highest honor one can achieve—which requires 60 hours of work. She also works part-time at Petsmart in Bismarck, and, during the summer months, works at Royses Twin City Produce in Mandan. Bauer’s long-term goal is to become a certified veterinarian. Her parents are Mor-Gran-Sou members Charles and Lois Bauer of Mandan.

Dillon Zins, who looks forward to a career in information technology, will begin his college education at Bismarck State College for two years. He plans to transfer to the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, where he will work toward a four-year degree in computer science, with plans to earn a certificate in computer animation and video game design. Zins, the 2009 valedictorian of Flasher High School, participated in many high school activities including band, annual staff, drama and various sports activities. During his high school tenure, Dillon has received recognition earning a “Superior” acting award at the State One-Act Play competition, and was the recipient of the “Storm,” a local football team award. He also serves as an altar server for his parish church. Zins’ parents are Mor-Gran-Sou members Florian and Judy Zins of Flasher.

Lyndsey Herda plans to graduate from the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton with an associate’s degree in dental hygiene. This 2009 Mandan High School senior will graduate with honors and is ranked fourth out of 212 students. Her school activities focus around band and foreign language. Herda, who currently serves as senior representative for the band to the Student Council, joined concert band in the sixth grade, playing trumpet. She also participates in jazz band, pep band and pit orchestra, to name just a few. Herda also currently serves as the president of her German club. Volunteer work has meant a lot to Herda, who has been involved with the Leo Club, YMCA and her church family. Last summer, Herda spent a week in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she helped deliver clothes to immigrant families. Herda is the daughter of Mor-Gran-Sou members Stephen and Karla Herda of Mandan.

Stacey Gerhardt plans to attend Bismarck State College and earn a degree in information technology.  Upon graduation, she plans to find a job to fulfill her degree choice. Gerhardt, who has earned the honor of salutatorian, will graduate from Flasher Public School in May. Sports kept Gerhardt very busy while in high school. She played basketball and volleyball. During this past volleyball season, Gerhardt served as the volleyball team captain and helped her team receive a District 9 Volleyball Honorable Mention award. She also was the treasurer for her senior class. Gerhardt is an honor student who received the Torchbearer Award. During the summer months, she provided childcare for a local family. Gerhardt’s parents are Mor-Gran-Sou members Lawrence and Gloria Gerhardt of Flasher.

Mor-Gran-Sou Electric is very honored for the opportunity to play a small part in the education of these young folks. Because of the many accomplished applicants, it took our judges a greater part of the day to decide on the recipients. Congratulations to all the graduates of 2009 and best wishes as you pursue your dreams.
